OVERVIEW OF THE PESTICIDE INDUSTRY IN BANGLADESH

Bangladesh is an agrarian country, where a large percentage of people earn their living from agriculture. The land on which it is cultivated is affected by various factors, which take a heavy toll on the produce. These include insects, diseases, weeds, rodents and more. It is estimated that losses due to pest attacks in Rice is almost 20-40% and around it 25% in the case of vegetables. Though it is true that almost all farmers are directly engaged with pesticide use, this use of pesticide in Bangladesh is lower (less than 1 kg/House) than most other countries.

Bangladesh’s Agriculture Industry accounts for over 14% of the country’s GDP, with the industry growing at almost 3.5% per year. Though the agriculture sector is diminishing due to the country moving more towards Manufacturing and Services in recent years, almost 80% of the country lives in rural areas, making farming a primary source of income for most of the population. This ensures that the Pesticide Industry is one that is very lucrative and will continue being so in the years to
come.
